Same-Day Dental Crowns in Loris: When Is a CEREC Crown Recommended?

A chipped, cracked, or weakened tooth can make chewing uncomfortable and leave the tooth vulnerable to further damage. A dental crown may help restore its strength and function. At Loris Family Dentistry, we offer same-day CEREC crowns for patients who qualify, making it possible to complete many crown restorations in a single visit.

What Is a Same-Day CEREC Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made covering that fits over a prepared tooth to restore its shape, protect remaining tooth structure, and support comfortable chewing. CEREC technology uses digital impressions and computer-assisted design to create a ceramic crown at our office.

Traditional crowns often involve a temporary restoration while a dental laboratory makes the permanent crown. With CEREC, we can typically design, make, and place the restoration during the same appointment. This approach reduces repeat visits and eliminates the need for a temporary crown in many cases.

When Might We Recommend a CEREC Crown?

We may suggest a same-day dental crown when a tooth needs more support than a standard filling can provide. Common reasons include:

·       Extensive tooth decay: A large cavity may leave too little healthy tooth structure for a reliable filling.

·       A cracked or broken tooth: A crown can help protect a restorable tooth and restore its chewing surface.

·       A tooth treated with a root canal: Some root canal-treated teeth, especially back teeth, benefit from a crown to reduce the risk of fracture.

·       A failing large filling: Replacing an older restoration with a crown may be appropriate when the surrounding tooth has become weak.

The best option depends on the location and extent of the damage, your bite, and the condition of the remaining tooth.

What Happens During a Same-Day Crown Appointment?

We begin with an examination to determine whether a CEREC crown is appropriate. If you need a crown, we numb the area, address decay or damaged material, and prepare the tooth. We then take a digital scan to develop a restoration that fits your tooth and bite.

Using CEREC technology, the ceramic crown is designed and milled in the office. We check its fit, shape, and appearance before securely bonding it in place. Although treatment can often be completed in one visit, appointment length and suitability vary based on the tooth's needs.

Is a CEREC Crown Always the Best Option?

Not every damaged tooth needs a full crown. Depending on the amount of healthy tooth structure remaining, a filling, inlay, or onlay may be more conservative. Deep cracks, infection, or damage extending below the gumline can require further treatment before a crown is considered.

Our goal is to recommend a restoration that supports long-term oral health, not simply the fastest procedure.

How Should You Care for Your New Crown?

A CEREC crown still requires consistent care. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss around the crown, and keep your regular dental checkups. Avoid chewing ice or using your teeth to open packages, as hard forces can damage both crowns and natural teeth.

If your bite feels uneven or you develop persistent discomfort, contact our office for an evaluation.
